SWO file photo

MAY 21, 2008 Senior Norman Young has a big presence wherever he goes, and those powerful arms made him a standout on the track team, which has concluded its season. His personal best of 45 feet in the shot put is a product of his hard work and determination to win big. He spends a lot of time throwing on his own and doesn’t always have a coach over his shoulder when he practices. “Most of the time, we have our off days, but Norman knows what he needs to do to be good, and he does work hard at it,” says Coach Jill Gardiner, adding that Young is very positive and has a great attitude. “He is willing to work hard and bust his butt to be the best of his ability,” sophomore Ciara Lewis said. “He is very athletic and determined to reach to the highest level.” Young is very supportive of his teammates and always has an attitude to do the best he can. He keeps them ahead and positive during meets, according to junior Davion Waters. “He is fun to be around at meets,” Waters says. “He keeps our spirits up.” Young had hoped to reach the 3A state championships this year, but came up short in the Western Regionals. He tossed the discus 113 feet, 11 inches and the shot put 40 feet, 3.25 inches
