By Marilyn Ramirez

Ms. Laura Baca, know as the Diploma Project Adviser at Venice High, is in her second year helping run the program Diploma Groups which is intended to help students who need extra encouragement or help to graduate from high school. The purpose is to help students with options for making up credits, job searches, interview skills, options after high school, college and career choices, drug awareness, dating, and keeping to a budget. Last year, Ms. Baca's students who were all at-risk decreased their absences by 65% and F's by 42% when they participated in seven sessions or more. This program is voluntary and open for any students who need additional support, although some students are summoned. Parental consent is required to participate in the Diploma Groups. "I hope this is useful to the students who participate," said Ms. Baca. The goal for this program is to motivate students in a fun interactive way to graduate high school. Ms.Baca is hoping to have 150 students total this year. The groups meet about three times a month for an hour in small groups, in the diploma room in the West Building, starting in October. To sign up, see Ms.Baca in the counseling office.
