Small Towns Foster Big Dreams

By Alexa Collesides

For those seniors who are leaving us in June, the freshmen who have recently established themselves in the high school community, and for everyone else in between, I’d like to provide you with an insightful tidbit that I recently discovered myself; small town living is pretty great. How many of you have ever said or thought, “I cannot wait to get out of this one-horse town”? I know I certainly have. To say this town is small would simply be an understatement. Yet on the contrary, they say “good things come in small packages.” This quote proves to be true in our community. With a student population of about 500, Coxsackie-Athens High School has created an identity of a certain quaintness that neighboring towns have come to recognize. Everyone knows everyone else. There isn’t anonymity in this community; when you walk down Mansion Street, you are bound to run into someone you know; it may be your neighbor, your dentist, your teacher, or even your mom’s best friend’s husband. Whether you find this to be a positive or a negative thing, there is always a friendly face greeting you somewhere. Our close-knit community can provide a student with development of character while surrounded by many layers of support. Before you realize it, you’ll be ready to leave with all the lessons you’ve learned here at C-A to continue on your journey to develop new memories, new friends, and, most importantly, new lessons. I ask you to take into consideration the teachers that have or will teach you everything you need to know, the parents who’ve supported you in any and all activities, clubs which have helped you give back to the community, and the friends who’ve laughed and stood beside you during it all. Many people wish they could go back into high school to reestablish themselves as the person they want to be. So, with that, I say appreciate our community. Whether you plan on leaving as soon as you graduate, or if you plan on raising a family of your own in this town, the community you grew up in will help to shape your character as a person and as an adult. Although I personally do not plan on staying here after graduation, I do believe in making the most of my experiences here and appreciating all this community has done and provided for me. “Take what you can from your dreams; make them as real as anything.”-Dave Matthews
