Viva la Vita?

By Rebecca Connolly

Like pop star Rihanna, Vita Chambers is rising out of the small island of Barbados with both a new sound and beat. Her unique voice and the fast tempo, however, cannot compensate for her fairly generic themes. With songs about being both boy•crazy and such the “wild” youngster, the singer has yet to provide anything new to the music industry. Don’t get me wrong, her song “Like Boom” can be pretty catchy, but the lyrics seem to hold no meaning or relevance to the song’s topic: having a crush on someone. For example, one line bluntly states, “I like fast cars and candy bars/I like you”. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never used my preference in transportation and chocolate fixes as explanation for having a crush on someone. Could Vita’s seemingly random lyrics be related to the third song on her album titled “A.D.D.”? The world may never know. Still, though, Vita’s catchy melodies can get stuck in your head; trust me, I’ve been singing “I like eight•oheight’s and chocolate cake” for several days now (am I the only person who does not know what an “eight•oh•eight” even is? That would be embarrassing…). Chambers almost resembles a poor rendition of our beloved Lady Gaga, sadly enough. So if you like catchy beats and songs about liking someone so much you think you may just have Attention Deficit Disorder, then Vita Chambers, aka Vita, just might be your next stop on iTunes. As for me, I’d rather listen to songs about keeping a straight face while playing poker. (That is what that song’s about, right?)
