By Chelsea Salko

As each year brings new development and trends, the music industry also experiences changes as new people come into the business and others call it quits. Yet, some artists seem to just take a break, reentering the business a few years down the road. For artists and bands like Lily Allen, The Eagles, Jay-Z, Brooks and Dunn, 50 Cent, and the Spice Girls, calling it quits has lead to just a premature retirement. Whether coming back into the business just to do a couple more concerts or to record more songs, these artists have appeared once again after they retired. In 1980, with the band barely on speaking terms, The Eagles decided to call it quits. When asked if they would ever get back together, drummer Don Henley ’ s only words were “ when hell freezes over. ” Yet, fourteen years later, the band re-united to form a tour and record a new album. In the late 2000s, teenagers and fans wept worldwide when the news broke out that the Spice Girls decided to go their separate ways in the music industry. Many of the group members tried their own solo careers but didn ’ t make it far until June 28, 2007, when a conference was held in London announcing the group ’ s intention to reunite once more for a worldwide concert tour to celebrate the group ’ s history and final farewell to fans. “ I’m so glad that they decided to do the world tours because I was able to go, and hearing the songs again reminded me of years back when they were just coming out with ‘Wannabe’, ” junior Caroline Campbell said. In the same year, the famous Brooks and Dunn decided to throw in the towel too, mainly coming from Garth Brooks, who “ needed to be home with his kids. ” Many fans soon consoled themselves with a series of “ lost ” recordings and compilations before Brooks returned onstage in 2007 and officially came out of retirement in 2009. Since then, Brooks and Dunn have recorded popular songs like “ Cowgirls Don ’ t Cry ” , and others, creating their latest album Cowboy Town. “ Brooks and Dunn are just one of the many groups that baseball listens to while warming up, but personally, I’m more of a top 40 kind of guy,” junior Ty Saunders said. Three years after both Brooks and Dunn and the Spice Girls decide to hang up their microphone, rapper Jay-Z called it quits as well. “ I ’ ve done it all, ” said the famous rap superstar, not knowing down the road that he would soon come out of retirement in 2006 and by 2009, Run This Town with hits involving Rihanna, Kanye West, Bono, and The Edge. “ I love that Jay-Z came out of retirement, ” English teacher Kristin Collis said. “ His lyrics are always fresh and I love singing along to them. ” The latest premature retiree is British pop star Lily Allen, who in 2009 decided to bow out of the music industry to pursue fashion projects and write a musical. Yet, within days it was also announced that Allen would be Jay-Z ’ s opening performance at his London show this summer. Coming out of retirement already?
