By Livi Pitzo

The Hunger Games , the first installment of Suzanne Collin’s popular series, will premiere in theaters on March 23 rd , 2012. The movie is based on the first book of the trilogy written by Collins. The movie, and the book, tells the story of a sixteen year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen who lives in the country of Panem, a nation with twelve districts ruled by the oppressive Capitol. To stress the power of the Capitol and the weakness of the districts, two children from each district, one boy and one girl, are chosen to compete as tributes in the Hunger Games, a deadly competetion where the children are forced to fight to the death until there is one victor. In an effort to defend her family, Katniss becomes District Twelve’s girl tribute. Along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark, she embarks on a journy with only one goal in mind; to survive. Katniss’s story doesn’t end with the finale of The Hunger Games , but continues on the following two books, Catching Fire and Mockingjay . Katniss’s character is played by actress Jennifer Lawrence, and Josh Hutcherson will be starring as Peeta. Also appearing in the film are Liam Hemsworth (Gale), Elizabeth Banks (Effie Trinket), Woody Harrelson (Haymitch), Alexander Ludwig (Cato), and Lenny Kravitz (Cinna). After the release of the first book in September of 2008, the series has caught fire amongst readers and its popularity put all three books on top ten lists in 2010 and 2011. Producers hope the movie will be equally as popular, and after the premiere of the first installment, fans will be eargly awaiting the film versions of the second and final books.
