By Malcolm Jones

In case you haven’t heard, Cleveland High School has a budding new group. A new bike club has formed among the ranks of the student body. Headed by Sophomore Ian Jackson, the bike club is a group of kids heading off bike related issues concerning Cleveland and the surrounding neighborhood. The club had its first meeting Feb. 23 and has begun planning various projects for the Cleveland bike community. One of the first projects on their plate is building shelters for the Franklin Street bike racks, seeing as the majority of the Cleveland bike racks are uncovered. They are in communication with a few community organizations that are going to be helping with the project. “It's sort of a project for the community, by the community,” says Jackson, who is founder and president of the bike club. The bike club has a few other plans for the cycling community as well, including converting the woodshop into a bike workshop, and creating a new bike racing team which would be sponsored by the local community business A Better Cycle. They also plan to organize various community bike rides around the city.“I just want to promote cycling at Cleveland, and create a community of cyclists,” says Jackson. Club meetings take place every Thursday at lunch in Joseph Blasher’s room. The meetings generally consist of talking about the bike-related issues in the community, and trying to find suitable realistic solutions, coming up with and working on new projects, and learning and working on bike maintenance. Anyone who is interested in the club can talk to Blasher or Jackson.
