The girls played their first game against Panther Creek, resulting in a loss of 15-5. The girls quickly recovered with a 12-10 win against Middle Creek the following Friday. Since then, the team has lost to Apex (19-4), Green Hope (16-1) and Panther Creek again (12-11). The lacrosse team has accomplished three more wins against Holly Springs (14-3), Broughton (12-11) and most recently their game against Enloe with a final score of (19-15). “I honestly thought that we would have a building year this year, but I was happy to be surprised by such an amazing bunch of girls,” said Colleen Kennedy, junior and varsity co-captain. The women’s lacrosse team has two new attributes this year. Leigh Blinn and Joe Stallworth are coaching for the first time ever this year and have succeeded in putting together a strong team of girls. Also, for the first time ever, Athens women’s lacrosse now has a junior varsity team. Despite the fact that there is not a single senior playing this year, the number of girls who tried out for the lacrosse team was almost double than last year. Instead of making cuts, it was decided that it was about time for women’s lacrosse to include a new junior varsity team. For the majority of the girls who made JV, it was their first time playing. “The team is great, and it is great that we finally have a junior varsity team. Everyone on the team is like a family, and everyone is always being enthusiastic and cheering each other on and giving tips and everyone has so much dedication to the team too,” said Becca Ayers, freshman and junior varsity co-captain. Junior varsity has yet to win a game, but they have improved greatly as a team since the beginning of the year. Since not all of the other high schools have junior varsities, Athens JV does not get to play against as many teams as varsity. So far they have played against Panther Creek three times and lost (6-2), (9-4) and (9-1), respectively. The only other team they have played is Apex (12-1). Even though there is a varsity and junior varsity, the coaches have both varsity and JV practices at the same time so that the girls can bond as one big team and all learn from each other. “We feel like a family and we are excited that we are going to have the same team next year because there are no seniors. We are working really hard to be at the same level as teams like Apex and Greenhope,” said Leigh Blinn, women’s lacrosse coach. The women’s varsity lacrosse team plays their next home game against Cary the first Tuesday after spring break, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. Junior varsity has no more home games, but their next game is at Apex on April 17 at 5 p.m.
