By Josh Welsh

Those who were looking for something to do on Saturday, May 12, 2012, did not have to go far; NHHS was host to a wide variety of events including the NH rec council Opening Day, a car show, a plant sale, and the annual D.U.C.K.S. yard sale. This year, the addition of the car show to the array of activities was well received. This event was coordinated by senior Ben Brosh, the president of NH’s very own car club. John Richardson, a 1928 Model A Ford owner, participated in the car show and said, “I enjoyed talking to the people and hearing stories about when they were little...maybe their grandfather or father had one of these cars or maybe they learned to drive in one of them. To me, it’s more about the people then the car.” Those who were enjoying the cars were also treated to the musical stylings of DJ Shane Dougherty, an alumnus of North Harford. “I really enjoyed the car show and I thought the music was a nice touch to it as well,” said senior Brad Long. Those who traveled down to the parking lot next to the turf field could go shopping at the annual D.U.C.K.S. yard sale. There were 72 vendors at the sale, and each one had to provide 5 canned goods to rent a space and pay $5 for a table. All of this money as well as the canned goods are being donated to charities like the Lions Club Food Bank and Mason Dixon. “This yard sale is to help the community out,” said North Harford art teacher and D.U.CK.S. club sponsor, Mrs. Sandra Schlehr. At the sale, there were great bargains including $2 DVD’S, classic books at cheap prices, and various antique pieces. “I collect pottery and I bought two beautiful handmade potteries and I bought a little keepsake for my great god child which is also handmade pottery,” said English teacher, Ms. Linda Duncan. In addition to these events, there was a parade celebrating opening day for recreational baseball and softball. It began at North Harford Middle School and proceeded under the tunnel to the track at NHHS. The NH marching band led the teams around the track and accompanied the parade with a lively march. “It was cool to see the community celebrating this way for recreational teams,” said Long. Also, the Ag Department was having a plant sale on the bus ramp in front of the school to raise money for the program. Mrs. Holly Woodward coordinated the sale and said, “It was successful and we raised a lot of money.”
