The mood was a quiet, but excited one. Most of the students were just excited about the fact that they were about to get out for Thanksgiving break, but those who had been selected to be in NHS were very excited about being accepted into the very infamous club. To give you a little background on National Honors Society; it does a number of very important service activities during the year. The advisor of NHS is Mary Ann Edsal. The officers are president, Mathew Smith, vice president, Timothy McGinnis, secretary, Megan Harper, treasurer, Derrik Banerjee, and historian, Mellissa Cydrus. The criteria to get into NHS is intense. NHS is more than just an Honor Roll. The Honor Society chapter establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student's outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built. Scholarship: Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character. Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle. The new members of the NHS include Heather Spangler, Rachael Spangler, Jill Truex, Kristen Walters, Zach Hammond, Josh Downing, Jenny Lloyd, Mel Acosta, Justin Topping, Dimitrios Spantitios, Allison Neff, Clark McMahon, Jimmy McIlroy, Kory Hartinger, Alyssa Hogue, Lauren Bivens, Shane Bobbit, Abbie DesJardins,Grace Winner, Jessica Kraft, Kevin Landis, Bethany Nickalaus, Malachi Oyer, Cassie Diltz, and Olivia Wise. The lucky 26 new members of National Honors Society got to have their very first meeting on Friday, Dec. 1. “It is important because NHS is a good service and leadership organization,” Kristen Walters said. “This club will help me to become a very well rounded student.”
