By Tehzeeb B.

The fourth annual Science Fair has outgrown the media center and has moved to the cafeteria to accommodate all 130 entries. On Monday, January 22, RMS students displayed their projects for judging and a chance to progress to regional competition. The judges chose four first place winners, each representing a different field of science. Winners of the science fair have the opportunity to win scholarships, cash awards, and scholarly recognition should they advance through the local, regional, and state level fairs. First prize for behavioral and social science went to Sania Tharani for her project on the popularity of gifted and non-gifted teens. Student Nick Diaz claimed first place in Physical Science with his study of weight's effect on solar car performance. Student Heather Donaghy won first place in Life Science for her investigation on Gatorade vs. water, and the effects on fitness running. Eighth graders Peggy Chambers and Rachel Greene won the top engineering prize for their robotic arm. Marie Ferreire won first place in earth science with her water purification project. And in computer science, Danniel Angulo won for his study of artificial intelligence and pong. A complete list of winners appears below. The RMS Science Fair was started in 2004 by 8th grade science teacher Rick Frey. RMS holds the only Science and Engineering Fair for middle school in Gwinnett County.
