By Princess Lilyhammer

Spidey’s back, but a mysterious symbiotic substance has attached itself to him. Now he must defeat the powers of darkness and three new villains, while sorting out his personal problems. The storyline has improved significantly since the previous movie. It begins when Peter and MJ are lying on a web, watching comets above. Suddenly a meteorite crashes on the earth nearby, and out oozes a black, animate creature that attaches itself to Peter’s scooter. Eventually this possesses him, and he becomes a careless student with an entirely different personality. It even surfaces when he is Spider-Man, and the symbiote turns his suit black. The theme is a classic “man vs. himself” plot. The sweet, smart, charming, caring Peter against the dark, careless, reckless rebel (with awesome hair and eyeliner) influenced by an alien being. Can one defeat the powers of darkness without destroying oneself? Tobey McGuire does a fantastic job with Spider-Man. Kirsten Dunst very dramatic Mary Jane, but can be predictable. Somehow I cannot take Topher Grace seriously in his role as Eddie Brock/Venom (maybe because his previous role was Eric Foreman from That 70’s Show?) There is one part where Harry Osborn loses his memory, and James Franco portrays that adequately. The scenes that took place in the church at sunset were memorable. Other than being a climax in the film, the lighting and special effects were used very well when the symbiote let go of Spidey and adopted Eddie Brock. And of course, the scenes of Spider-Man swinging from building to building in the New York jungle are spectacular. The quality of the sound is great, and one that stood out to me was the moving sand in the Sandman scenes. The dramatic music is a wonderful addition to the moods in the film, in scenes like the climax and the end. The powerful music during the symbiote’s transformations makes it very believable. I think the cutting makes the film a lot of what it is. There is a wonderful expression of montage during fighting scenes. The shots of Spider-Man swinging around are probably some of the best editing I have seen.
