By Maddy G.

The Lab School's Tennis Team is starting up, andDarrel Parker coaches the team. Patricia Divine is helping with coaching duties. Darrel enjoyswatching and playing tennis, and he also thinks it is a good exercise. Hehas never played tennis for a team or in competition but he plays for fun. He enjoys coaching the students at this school. Theteam plays five games and then a tournament. The schools they play areWashington Christian Academy (WCA), Barrie, Calverton, Seed, andRiverdale. Darrel was told that Calverton is a tough team to beat. Hedoes not know what last year's season was like because he did not coachtennis -- Jon Stocks did. Darrel says, "There are few returningplayers but there are more players than last year." Thereis no limit to how many players are on the team, but they only rank thetop seven players. The results of the ranked matches determine whichteam wins the overall match. Darrel said, "What I look for in a playeris if they enjoy tennis, practice hard, and if they listen, andunderstand the rules of tennis." The age range is high school kidsfourteen through eighteen-years-old. No senior has played for all fouryears. One person who is trying out for the tennis team said, "I amjoining the team because a lot of my friends were joining and I enjoytennis." The two practices are on Tuesdays andThursdays at Palisades Recreation Center, which is where the P.E.classes play outside. Palisades is approximately three minutes down thestreet from The Lab School. Palisades Recreation Center has four tenniscourts and is gated. Players need rackets, shoes, tennis balls, a racket case, and a water bottle. Thereare three games in the month of April. Two of them are away and one isat Palisades. The away games will be played on Thursday the 23rdagainst Barrie and Thursday the 30th against Seed. The home game isagainst WCA on Tuesday the 21st. In May there will be two games.
