The Blazer girls’ soccer team headed to Newcastle on April 9 to battle the Dogies. They tried keeping their loss column to zero as they looked for another conference win. This will be the second time the Blazers have played the Dogies and the first meeting was in favor of the Blazers with a dominating win. They were able to do the same thing again, winning 4-2. Then they played another conference game against Cheyenne South where they won in winning fashion 9-2. The next upcoming conference game was against the number one-ranked Buffalo Lady Bison. The Trailblazers took it to them and gave them a game, with the ending score tied at one a piece. The players were happy and thought their win was a good deal. Caitlyn Cummings said “We played really well and worked together a lot. We focused on what needed to be done and got it done.” She also added “They had a couple of break downs on defense but we controlled the game for the most part. They will work to improve their through balls and combination passes and also playing smarter. Cummings also said “We played awesome against a good team and our defense was really strong and our offense took advantage when we had the ball.” Cummings is one of the Blazers leading scorers and has scored a goal in each of the conference games. Courtney Bustillos said, “Newcastle was probably one of our best games our defense has played all year. Offensively we needed to pass the ball better but we pulled it together. One of the best victories of my soccer career.” She was also happy with the win against South and a tie against Buffalo. Bustillos also said, “Our ball control and passing was a downside and we plan on improving those things as the season goes on.” Brittany Mitchell said, “This season our team has been very successful with a whole lot more control and we don’t play kickball anymore.” Also when asked about the games Mitchell said, “ We didn’t pass as much and we look to improve on our passing game as the season progresses.” When asked how the Newcastle, South, and Buffalo game, Coach Brian Harms said, “ The first two games we learned what our weaknesses are, and against Buffalo we recognized that we had to be strong on the defensive end.” He also added, “We accomplished that and need to work on the passing game more as the season goes on.”
