Movies New to DVD By: Max Fellows Just recently I watched the movie Evan Almighty, and to say so I was not as impressed as I was when I saw Bruce Almighty. Don’t get me wrong though, it was a very good movie. The key thing that I noticed while watching both of these movies is that they are both about God’s messages to us. In Bruce Almighty, God tries to help Bruce realize that he does everything for a purpose and you can’t always have everything. In the end of the movie Bruce sees this. In Evan Almighty the plot and moral of the story changes completely. God is still trying to teach someone something, but this time it is with Evan Baxter and God wants him to understand how to change the world. God, who is played by Morgan Freeman, (Bruce Almighty) tells Evan Baxter (Steve Carrell) that to change the world all you need to do “Is an Act of Random Kindness.” This spells out A.R.K. which coincidentally is what God wants Evan to build. Evan at first is a little hesitant at building the A.R.K. because anyone would be after just seeing someone who called him or herself God. Evan continues to live his life as a congressman, but he just can’t avoid the animals that follow him two by two. After many signs from God he decides to build the A.R.K. Throughout the rest of the movie we see the story of Noah and his A.R.K. play out, but in the end Evan is thrown a twist. He is not building the A.R.K to save the animals. You must see the movie to learn what Evan learns. The movie is very well done and the cast has many familiar faces such as: Steve Carrell, Morgan Freeman, Wanda Sykes, John Goodman, Lauren Graham, Molly Shannon, and of course Jonah Hill from Superbad. All of these characters add a little something to the plot of this story, and in the end the whole story comes together. The one main thing I noticed though with Steve Carrell was his acting. This was not an ordinary role for Carrell like The Forty-Year-Old Virgin. This role for Carrell was more of a toned down role. It wasn’t as extreme of a role in which he is normally cast. It was more of a lighter role for a family movie. He does well in this character. Adding all of the acting, the movie, and the special effects together I would say that overall I would give this movie a 7 on the rating scale of 1 to 10.
