Rangers Honor Former Goalie: Mike Richter's Jersey #35 Raised to Garden Rafters

By Jimmy Finnegan, staff writer

Mike Ritcher was a former New York Ranger goalie. Last summer, he retired due to several head injuries. He was the best goalie the Rangers ever had. When the Rangers retired his jersey number 35, he became only the third person in the New York Rangers history to have their number retired and their jersey hung up in the ceiling of Madison Square Garden. The other two players were Rod Gilbert (number 7) and Eddie Giacamon (number 1). Richter led his team into the Stanley Cup in 1994 with a crucial save in game 4 on a Bure penalty shot. That was Rangers first championship since 1940. He was the winningest goaltender in Ranger history with 301 wins. He also led the US hockey team in 1996 to their first world cup ever. He played his entire career with the Rangers and was known as the best American-born goaltender. Mike Ritcher will go down in history as not only the best Rangers goalie yet, but as one of the best goalies ever.
