Behind enemy lines: Animal Testing

http://my.hsj.org/schools/newspaper/tabid/100/view/frontpage/schoolid/1544/articleid/247930/behind_enemy_lines_animal_testing.aspx

By Amy Schramm

In the morning when you are putting on make up or washing your hair do you ever thing what goes in to making the product? Well here are some facts you should know. Most products like eye shadow, eyeliner, shaving crème, deodorant, nail polish, shampoo, and conditioner are tested on animals in labs. Each year in the U.S. an estimated 70 million animals are maimed (to disfigure), blinded, scalded, forcefed chemicals, genetically manipulated, and otherwise hurt and killed in the name of science. For example, the Drazie test is and eye test the testers put caustic substances into rabbits eyes which is extremely painful for them. Sometimes rabbits break their necks and backs trying to escape. The companies are not required by law to do this to animals but do it because it is a way to avoid liability in the event of a lawsuit. These tests are mainly used to test the degree of harmfulness of the products and their ingredients. I don’t think that animals should be treated like this because they can feel and they can breathe. Why not take care of them like you would take care of each other. Animals should have rights too. For example LD (the lethal dose test measures the amount of a toxic substance that will, in a single dose, kill a certain percentage of animals in a test group. To avoid interference with results no painkillers are administered) tests do not measure human health hazards, but only determine the level of toxicity to the type of animal. So what is the point of animal testing with almost greater than 50% of the testing does not translate to humans? Non-animal testing methods that are more reliable and less expensive have been developed. Some of the new test methods in volve using cell and skin tissue cultures, corneas from eye banks and sophisticated computer and mathematical models. Some companies just quit testing all together and are using non-toxic natural ingredients. The American Heart Association with other responsible and committed organizations have identi fied and supported policies that foster intelligent and appropriate use of animal testing. Some animal testing has also had some benefits by helping researching cures such as AIDS/HIV. Some organizations that don’t use animals as test subjects’ animals are Mary Kay, Avon, The Body Shop, Almay, Abercrombie & Fitch, Victoria’s Secret, Aloe Vera, and Bath and Body Works. A group of people got together in a park and lit a dog on fire for fun (animal planet TV show). Don’t you think this kind of cruelty should be stopped? Hunting I understand you help the animals from over populating, but testing animals to see if the toxins in a product are too high isn’t a way to solve your problem. Testing it on other things that aren’t alive its not right. “Would you spray your dog in the eyes with perfume… I THINK NOT!” said Maddy Kirchoff. If you have pets would you want them to be hurt or greatly injured? If not why would you let other animals suffer too? To learn more about how you can help these animals to ASPCA.com to stop the suffering.
