By Becca Berg

Forget only taking art classes in school, when there are opportunities as close as our local Anoka County Library. This summer Mari Mihai, a senior here at Centennial, volunteered at the library in order to take care of some of her NHS hours. She began with putting books onto shelf after shelf, but when the opportunity arose for her to create a mural for the summer themed bulletin board next to the children’s books, she jumped at it. “I loved the looks on the kid’s faces, the way their eyes brighten up,” Mari said. “There was one time where a little girl came over and sat next to me and just watched me draw for ten minutes,” Mari said “This in- Senior student, Lauren Dame, spent two weeks at a private art school in Minneapolis taking classes and working on projects. “While at MCAD, we got to experience different classes and take a photo shoot with a local band, Communist Daughter.” Lauren said. “It was very stressful but in the end it really paid off and I had a lot of fun making new friends.” Laura Wiski spent four meaningful days with the Art Institutes this summer mainly just taking pictures. “We had two days for digital pictures and two days for the darkroom,” Laura said when referencing to her time spent with other Ai students. “The program inspired me to apply to that school and get in,” Laura said. “It really opened up my mind to what I can really do with photography.”
