With her soulful voice and unique song style, Gabriella Cilmi is sure to emerge as one of this year’s breakout stars. The Australian singer delivers a fun, refreshing selection of songs on her album Lessons Learned.
Cilmi’s intriguing voice is uniquely reminiscent of both Amy Winehouse’s and Natasha Beddingfield’s. It posses contains the raw power and spirit of Amy Winehouse’s, with the playfulness of Natasha Beddingfield’s. It is nicely displayed on “Got No Place to Go”, the first song on Cilmi’s album. The song sounds very different from many of today’s songs with its upbeat rhymes and lively mood, and would definitely make a great dance song. Another highlight on this album is its first single, “Sweet About Me.” Although it was only recently released in the United States, this song has become very popular in other countries around the world. It is easy to see why, with its relaxing feel and impressive vocals. This song seems like a perfect fit for the upcoming spring and summer months, when everyone is in the mood for laid-back songs.
Another impressive song is “Save the Lies: Good to Me.” It reminds you of an ‘80s dance song, and instantly puts you in a good mood. “Terrifying” is an edgy song which sound like those of the Bangles, an ‘80s all-girl band.
The album also contains a few slower, yet still spunky songs, which provide its listener with a good break from its upbeat dance songs. “Einstein” and “Round and Round” both have a lot of great emotion and the listener finds it easy to connect to them. “Awkward Game” is a slow, soulful showstopper which really showcases Cilmi’s versatility. “Safer” is a pretty ballad which is great for Cilmi’s voice.

Lessons Learned by Cilmi is a unique album with a lot of power and spirit. Don’t forget to add it to your spring shopping list!
