It was a week to celebrate reading, to emphasize the importance of reading, and to get students throughout the district excited about reading. Several event promotions were held and prizes were given out. Communithy leaders visited schools to talk to students about why they love to read. On Monday, paper hearts were passed out in every English class and students wrote down their favorite book and author. Also, at the beginning of each class period, the first sentence of a book was read over the intercom, and the first class to tell Mrs. Penn the correct book earned a classroom prize. Mrs. Penn passed out bookmarks and pencils to students on Tuesday, and there were door prizes, including books and posters, given out throughout the day as well. On Wednesday, each student visited the library and picked out a book to keep as their own; Assistant Superintendent Susan Kilby purchased books for every student in the school. Students were also encouraged to donate books for the "borrowing book shelf" project. This is a way for students who are unable to check out a library book to borrow a book, no questions asked. Thursday was Silent Reading Day, and students participated in silent reading throughout the district starting at 2:10. Guests from the community talked to students about why they love to read. Prizes were also given out to students with the most AR points for the third nine weeks. Visitors included Mayor Tony Young, Mrs. Hunt from the Taylor County Board of Education, Jeremy Taylor, Billy B. Smith, Fred Waddle, Dr. Ben Smith, Clem Haskins, Brian Rafferty, Rod Turpin, and several football and basketball players from Campbellsville University. Friday was dress up day, and students and teachers who dressed up as their favorite book character were entered into a drawing for a kindle. When asked about I Love to Read Week, Penn said, “I want to get kids excited about reading, as well as show the importance of reading.” For more information, contact Penn at tana.penn@taylor.kyschools.us .
