By Jennifer Horan

As the world views girls

A few days ago a girl who was kind and beautiful, walked into the school bathroom. Even though something about her complexion was wrong, she said hello with a smile, but quickly looked away and went into one of the stalls. A few minutes later, unusual noises could be heard coming from the stall. I turned and looked at the stall and saw her kneeling with her legs sticking out of the door. I realized that the noises were her feeding the addiction society handed her. I heard her start telling herself “I can’t do this anymore” and repeating “no”. I was left stunned and wondering what to do. Trying to help, I asked if she was okay and after a moment, she came out of her stall and said “No, I don’t know what’s wrong with me”. The sickening stench of vomit was heavy on her clothes, her complexion was pale and sickly. She simply asked where the nurse was and sadly said, “That’s what I’ll do." This shocking experience should never be allowed to happen again. No girl should ever have to ask herself what is wrong with her when conforming to the image with which society blinds women. The world's image is of a girl thin enough to be blown over by a strong breeze and so beautiful that most of her is fake. It is a disgusting image that causes horrific pain to the girls that don’t think they are as amazing and beautiful as they truly are. They look for the wrong ways to fix the disgusting propaganda that infiltrates their mind. I have no idea if this girl got the help that she direly needed. If so, then I commend her for the strength and courage to, not only realize what she was doing was wrong, but for looking for help to fix the problem. There are places that those suffering from eating disorders can turn to for help or information. One website was created by a women who suffered from an eating disorder and beat it. She has information and advice from admitting you have a disorder, to finding the right therapist and a list helpful centers and lines in Canada, USA, and other places. Her web site is http://www.mirror-mirror.org/eatdis.htm. It is wonderfully set up, brilliant, and helpful to anyone who finds themselves in this situation. If you know someone who suffers from any sort of eating disorder or have one yourself, then I encourage you to seek help and not be ashamed of it; there is nothing shameful about getting help.
