By Danny Loschiavo

From Justified to Funkified, Justin Timberlake is still the prince of pop. In fact, he even seems to take the artist formerly known as Prince’s style. The well awaited Futuresex/Lovesounds album, features Justin’s falsetto lyrics, over catchy synth lines, and laid back beats. It’s good to see Timberlake experiment with a new sound, and many critics are bashing the album, saying that going solo was a bad choice. I’d have to disagree. I’m not much of a Timberlake fan, but this album is like a breath of fresh air in the midst of mainstream exhaust. FutureSex/LoveSounds – Ah, those familiar Timbaland chimes. Featured in “Promiscuous Girl” by Nelly Furtado as well, these chimes make this song what it is, aside from the creeping bass. SexyBack – The overplayed hit single with a cool vocal effect. If you haven’t heard this one, dust off your radio, and turn it on. Sexy Ladies – The highlight of this tune is the Prince-like instrumentation and funk feel, that makes you want to slap on those bell bottoms and lace up some platform shoes. The weak lyrics don’t cut it though. Timbaland should keep his whack side comments to himself. My Love – Already a radio hit, this catchy choppy synth progression, is becoming a classic R&B sing-along. Love Stoned – Upbeat song with a chorus sounding something like a choir, accompanied by a jazzy brass sound. What Goes Around – Featuring some type of Middle Eastern instrument, this mellow, R&B, song is calming, but doesn’t do much for me. Chopped – Three-Six Mafia? That must be a misprint. I guess Justin Timberlake’s targeting the gangster crowd now too. Aside from Timberlake’s weak rhymes, it’s a dark, piano/string centered, stereotypical Three-Six mafia track. Damn Girl – This old school track, may not have strong lyrics, but the funk style is addictive. Summer Love – Rockin synth, with a simple beat. It’s hard not to move listening to this one. Until the End of Time - Casual vocals, and wait…Phil Collins? Is that you? Losing My Way – A gloomy melody, about a man named Bob, trying to find himself. The further into the song you listen to, the more it sounds like it’s straight out of a gospel choir in a Baptist church somewhere down south. Pose – Slow piano tune, classic R&B. Perfect opportunity to grab your date and step all over their toes.
