By Christina Athans

Two students were caught cheating last year during first semester final exams. “I feel that kids don’t think they are doing anything wrong. They really don’t understand the consequences,” said Christ Knutsen, assistant principal. A small group of kids were caught cheating through text messaging, via their cell phones. After texting three people during a history final, the student continued texting friends during his English final. However, during this class he was caught. The teacher immediately confiscated the phone and sent him outside the classroom for the rest of the period. When class was over he was sent to Knutsen’s office. The text messages in the student’s cell phone were searched and read over in order to find the students that were accomplices in this cheating crime. Fortunately, only one student responded throughout the two tests. Knutsen called that student during fifth period using the student’s phone. Hanging up, thinking her friend was just trying to prank her, she was in even more trouble. Within minutes after that phone call, a security guard escorts her to the office. “I was so scared that I wanted to cry. I know now that for sure I would never cheat or even get involved,” the student said. The student texting received failing grades for both the History and English finals, failing semester one of English and History. “During second semester last year in English, my teacher kept a closer look on me with all tests, quizzes and even assignments,” he said. For further evidence of the cheating problem, just a few weeks ago students were caught cheating by means of exchanging answers in the school bathrooms. “If you’re going to cheat, just be ready for the consequences!” the texting student said.
