Motivational speaker coming to Maize

http://my.hsj.org/schools/newspaper/tabid/100/view/frontpage/schoolid/2185/articleid/471643/motivational_speaker_coming_to_maize.aspx

By Jordan Watkins

Motivational speaker Laymon Hicks will speak to Maize students Nov. 14 during fourth block. Hicks will speak to students about becoming leaders in their communities. Raised by his grandparents, Hicks grew up with “the wrong crowd,” often submitted to peer pressure and was kicked out of the National Honor Society for cheating on a test. However, he still graduated with a 4.0 and went on to become student body president at Florida State University. These experiences have inspired Hicks to teach others that “failure is not a fatality” and that they can “Get Up, Get Out, and Go Get it!” Sophomore Aaron Shaw said Hicks is an inspirational speaker. “He speaks to things related to teenagers and becoming leaders,” Shaw said. After hearing him speak at a student council workshop in Winfield, StuCo wanted other students to hear him as well. It worked with the Kansas State High School Activities Association to bring Hicks to Maize. The entire school, along with middle school student council members and the board of education, will attend his speech.
