By Kelsey Fahler

The Bison Belles show off the awards they won at competition.

After weeks of practice, the Bison Belle drill team attended the Texas Pride Dance Competition in Willis on Saturday. This was the Belles’ only dance competition this year, and they brought home seven awards in all.
This has been a very different year for the drill team. Not only did they switch directors, almost every girl was new to dancing. None of these obstacles seemed to faze the team though, as they kept smiling through all the challenges thrown their way.
The team took six dances to the competition; three team routines and three officer routines. All six routines were entered in the small team division at the competition. The team’s routines were represented in the categories of jazz, pom, and hip hop. The officer’s routines fell into the categories of jazz, pom, and modern.
The team’s dances achieved four awards in all. They received the sweepstakes award, which are top honors. Receiving the sweepstakes honors made them eligible to achieve the judges’ award, in which each judge must score the team’s dances above a 92 on the score sheet. The team achieved this award also. They also brought home a best in category award for both their team jazz and their team pom routines.
The Belles’ officer routines also brought home three accolades. The officers received sweepstakes honors for their three routines. They also achieved a best in category award for their pom routine, and a runner-up best in category award for their jazz routine.
Those attending the competition were Captain Christie LaCour, First Lieutenant Kelsey Fahler, line members Jazmine Diaz, Nancy Espinoza, Cassie Ferguson and Juana Vazquez, and director Megan Rodell.
Senior and Captain Christie LaCour also entered a solo routine in the competition. She received 1 st Division honors for her routine to Britney Spears’ “Circus.”
After all of their hard work in preparing for this competition, the Belles are very excited about their awards. They are now going to start preparing for 09-10 tryouts on April 17th. They look back on an exciting year, and are looking forward to what they hope to be an even greater time next year.
