DECA hosts Turkey Bowl

On the night of the Virtual Turkey Bowl tournament, the football players were not on the field, but instead in front of a 38-inch TV screen in the cafeteria. DECA hosted the second annual Virtual Turkey Bowl, Nov. 7.KHS and WGHS students signed up to play head-to-head in the PlayStation2 tournament, using the video game Madden NFL 08. Football players from each school were able to see themselves in the video game after personalized teams were created to match each specific player.In addition to raising money for their club, DECA donated half the proceeds made from the event to the Anthony Smith Foundation. Randy Kriewall, math teacher, started the foundation in remembrance of 2001 KHS graduate Anthony Smith who lost his life to leukemia on Jan. 28, 2008.Along with the tournament, students could try their luck by entering in the raffle to win prizes or test their skills at Guitar Hero. There was even a hotdog-eating contest in which contestants were required to eat nine hotdogs and two hotdog buns. The winner was a student from WGHS who finished the contest in one minute and nine seconds.Playing against Webster in the virtual football game was similar to playing them on the field in the real game of football Kenny Mosely, senior, said.“[Turkey Bowl] felt very competitive, it made me feel like the real Turkey Day game,” Mosley said. “You’re not just playing to win, you’re playing for Kirkwood.”In the final game, the winners from KHS and WGHS came together to play. The game was played in the Keating Center and projected on a big screen, where spectators could watch and cheer for their teams. Marquis Terry, freshman, won the tournament against his Webster opponent, Joe Thomas, senior, with a final score of 58-10. Terry took home the first place prize, an iPod Touch, and Kirkwood kept the Turkey Bowl trophy.
