Tireless preparation pays off at Extravaganza

By Visor Board

La Fiesta Grande, also known as the annual Extravaganza, was a great success as usual. Without the numerous parent volunteers, the evening could not have gone as smoothly as it did. From Notre Dame tickets to a Myrtle Beach getaway for two, the Extravaganza had it all. Whether you were looking for a darling puppy or Cleveland Cavaliers floor seats, the bidding was wide open. The goal of this year’s Extravaganza was to raise funds for need-based financial aid. Many parent volunteers put in long, tiresome hours of hard work to transform the gym into a Mexican Fiesta. The result was a castle decked out in green, white and red. From piñatas to Mexican flags, the school looked fantástico ! Without the help of the parent volunteers, who knows how things would have turned out. Luckily, we have an amazing committee of women and men that really know how to throw a true fiesta. Another element of the night was the student volunteers. Many students gave up their Saturday night to give back to the school, which really gives it the Hoban, family feel. Whether it was greeting guests, valet parking, coat checking or serving gourmet meals, the students played a huge role in making sure the evening was a success. However, many students may have questioned how they were treated for giving up their Saturday night. The student volunteers were not compensated in anyway, which was expected, with the exception of the valet parkers; they were there to volunteer their time and deserved to be treated with respect. The catering company, however, often scolded students for being in the wrong place or simply talking to their parents for a second. Although the students did sign up to volunteer their time, they did not volunteer to be treated as employees of a company; they were volunteers. Overall, the gourmet dishes, the myriad of items to bid on and the fellowship between family and friends, made La Fiesta Grande a night to remember in spite of the chastisement.
