John Mayer Delivers Again: Battle Studies

http://my.hsj.org/schools/newspaper/tabid/100/view/frontpage/schoolid/2524/articleid/325584/john_mayer_delivers_again_battle_studies.aspx

By Kiley Garrett

Photo taken by Kiley Garrett

John Mayer is famous for his uncanny ability to match somber and thought–provoking lyrics with vibrant beats and captivating tunes. Mayer’s newest album, Battle Studies was released by Columbia Records on November 17, and has since garnered high profits, and heaping praise. Much like Mayer’s previous works, Battle Studies incorporates both tenderness and a ‘70s California-rock vibe, creating tracks that few listeners can resist. The majority of the songs deal with deteriorating relationships and romantic struggles; yet they are delivered with incredible grace. Mayer has created an album that is relatable and raw, yet tremendously powerful. “I approach music like a director doing a period piece," Mayer told Newswire. “Where Continuum was R&B and Soul, Battle Studies was written with the timelessness of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young in mind. The melodies and message are concise and from-the-gut with the efficiency of simplicity." Once again, the artist co-produced the album alongside Columbia Records, ensuring that each song held an emotive concept as well as a charming melody. In “Who Says”, Mayer questions the actual value of social norms and restraints, and the actual worth of social standards. One of the most popular tracks, “Half of My Heart”, (featuring country sensation Taylor Swift) conveys Mayer’s inability to commit. As the song hit Billboard’s top 25, listeners nationwide were sensing a connection. “John Mayer is a great artist,” said junior Hannah Borkowski. “Normally, I wouldn’t say I like that kind of music. But, I think he’s a really versatile musician, and anybody can appreciate his newest album. I really love it, it’s so refreshing.” Mayer, a 7-time Grammy award winner, completely surpasses genre restrictions. As a result, he is similar to a large variety of artists; his listeners span from jazz enthusiasts to avid R&B fans. Past hits like “Your Body is a Wonderland”, “Free Falling”, and “Back to You” are only succeeded by Mayer’s new works. “The first song, ‘Heartbreak Warfare’, has a really cool, relaxed sound,” said sophomore Sarah Pavel. “Right as I heard it, I knew this was going to be a great album. Needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed in the least. I think it’s some of his best work yet.”
