Scholarship started in honor of Sr. Mary Rose

By Abbi Keefe

Many scholarships are available to incoming freshmen each year at Holy Family High School. These scholarships reward students and help families pay for tuition. A new scholarship was established this year in honor of former principal Sister Mary Rose Lieb, who left Holy Family last year after 18 years as principal. This scholarship is called the Franciscan Service Scholarship. Business Administrator Mrs. Gloria Olson came up with the idea of this scholarship. “What is important is that we established the scholarship to remember Sister Mary Rose and all that she has done for Holy Family,” said Olson. As with any scholarship, there are certain requirements that students must meet in order to receive the Franciscan Service Scholarship. “[Students must] demonstrate a commitment to service to others,” said Olson. “There is also an application process just like we have with our other scholarships.” Olson said that community service was the most important requirement because that is what the Franciscan Order is all about. Each year, six incoming freshmen are rewarded the Franciscan Service Scholarship, said Olson. This year freshmen Daylan Bradshaw, Megan Chavez, Monique Gonzales, Stephanie McCourt, Alissa Noe and Holly Spitzer were the recipients. “[My family and I] began looking into receiving this scholarship because of my eighth grade teacher, Mrs. Fuller,” said Gonzales. “[My teacher] wrote several recommendations regarding all my community service and sent it to Holy Family,” said Gonzales. The most important thing was not that the students received the scholarship but, instead, it was why they received it, said Olson. “I volunteered at the soup kitchen and I tutored at Annunciation,” said Gonzales. “I helped coach volleyball and basketball teams at St. John’s,” said Spitzer. She also helped at a food bank. McCourt’s family found out about the scholarship through Holy Trinity’s bulletin. “I had three or so recommendations from adults who filled out a form about me,” said McCourt. Her service hours were gained through volunteering at her church on a regular basis, which she continues to do today. “I taught middle schoolers Catechism classes,” said McCourt. These students say they volunteer because they believe it’s important, not just for the scholarship money. “[Service] is an opportunity to give others what they need, it is an opportunity to let others feel the joy of new discoveries and to be the servant Jesus called us to be,” said Spitzer. Olson believes that these students’ dedication to service is an example to everyone. “I am so impressed with what these kids did,” said Olson. Prospective students can learn about this scholarship at surrounding Catholic elementary and middle schools and at Catholic churches, or on the Holy Family website.
