By By Jessi Eaton

On January 17, the varsity cheerleaders competed at their first competition of the season. They performed their 2:30 minute routine against Allen County Scottsville and Warren East. Their finishing score was 5.5 points lower than Allen County's, placing them in second place. "This was my first high school competition, and I was so nervous! But I think that we all pulled together and did very well," said Freshman Abby Harper. Also, during the competition, 6 girls from the squad were put on the KAPOS All Academic team. The winners were: Jessi Eaton, Caitlin Laster, Emmy Martin, Atalie Maxwell, Kelsey Patterson and Lindsey Traughbor. To be rewarded with an all academic certificate, a cheerleader would have to have a 3.3 cumulative GPA. Junior award winner Atalie Maxwell says, "I was very proud to have placed second and to receive an academic award. It was nice to get some recognition for not only being apart of a great cheer squad, but to also be able to keep up my grades with our hectic schedule." "I think that even though we didn't come in first, this was a great warm up for our future competitions. We all did really well, and even after one stunt fell, we kept going and ended up getting high marks in almost all of the categories," is what Emmy Martin had to say about the squad's performance. If the cheerleaders would've placed second, on February 14th they would compete in state KAPOS. However, they will be competing in Nashville at Jamfest on January 31st. Coach Leah Wood thought all of the girls did great, "1st runner up by only 5 points! We'll definitely get first next time!"
