By Jayme Shiarla

Courtesy photo of Julie Casillas

On March 24 th , the Holgate Varsity cheerleaders returned from their trip to Orlando, Florida. They had qualified for the AmeriCheer Internationals Competition in the summer at the Ohio State Fair, where they took first place and Grand Champions. They competed on Saturday, March 21 st and Sunday, March 22 nd . The best score was taken out of the two days of the competitions. They were placed first after the first day of competition, and swept their division by getting an even higher score the following day. They received a huge trophy, along with team jackets that have “International Champions” written on the back.
There were over forty squads that attended this competition including seven other countries. Out of these squads, the small town of Holgate was shy of only 0.67 points from Grand Champions of the overall competition. The amazing part about it is that this is very rare, considering they are only a Non-Mount division, while al l of the other squads were in the Mounting divisions.
By placing top five for Grand Champions, Holgate has qualified for the U.S. Finals in Cincinnati, which will take place towards the end of April. They are still deciding whether or not they are going for sure, but the squad is nowhere near ready for the year to be over!
