C-A Mock Trial and Quiz Bowl: All We Do Is Win!

This year, Coxsackie-Athens has two very successful teams on its hands! Rather than your usual boring old sports teams, the distinguished groups in question attest to the underrated intellectual prowess of this high school. Both the Mock Trial and Quiz Bowl teams are entering the final rounds of their respective competitions. Mock Trial is a very interesting competition in which C-A has the privilege of participating. Every team is given a case and works to perfect it in order to defeat the other team. The cases handled by Mock Trial are just like real court cases; however, there are certain rules of competition that restrict the trial from being more in favor or against one team or the other. This year, the Mock Trial team is undefeated so far. The team will be heading to the Regional Tournament later in the month. It will be held at the Catskill Court House this year, if anyone would like to come and support them! Members are Jacob Boeri, Liam Griffin, Brigid Heslin, Shannon Friel, Jocelyn Gao, Jonathan Goldson, Patrick Griffin, Alex Hanse, and Devin “The Intimidator” Wallace. Quiz Bowl (MasterMinds), another underrated team, has been doing very well this year. Led by team captain and league MVP, James Frauenberger, the Quiz Bowl team has a 9-3 record with a total of 2380 points. For those of you (I’m sure there are a bunch) who don’t know what Quiz Bowl is, let me explain. Similar to Jeopardy! , the moderator asks questions and the first person to buzz in and answer correctly gets 10 points for his or her team, unless he or she answers early and correctly, in which case 15 points are awarded. A three-part bonus question is asked after every toss-up question, but only for the team that answered the toss-up correctly. Each part of the bonus question is worth 10 points. While writing this article, I had the pleasure to talk to James Frauenberger about Quiz Bowl. Talking to notoriously laconic James Frauenberger is akin to trying to break into Fort Knox. However, due to my extraordinary investigative journalistic prowess, Mr. Frauenberger broke down in the end. He said he’s really enjoyed this season and is looking forward to playoffs, where he gets to “rematch” Stephen Masterson, his arch-rival and captain of LaSalle’s decent Quiz Bowl team. Members of Quiz Bowl this year are James Frauenberger, Jacob Boeri, Josh DeVinney, Jocelyn Gao, Liam Griffin, and Devin “Brains and Brawn” Wallace.
