Padre of the Month program honors student, staff work

By Carolina Loera

Many students try to just get through the seven hours of school, while others do everything in their power to gather what they can from those seven hours. These kinds of students don’t go unnoticed which is why some end up with the Padre of the Month Award. These Padres of the Month students are divided into three different categories. There are eight Students of the Month, two Athletes of the Month, and three Staff of the Month. All have the opportunity of going to lunch with Frank Mirizio, principal, and the rest of the Padre of the Month members. “I was chosen to be a Padre of the Month in August of 2009 and in October of 2011,” said junior Laura Torres. On the Marcos de Niza website, there is a list of all the Padres of the Month starting from this year going all the way back to the school year of 2005-2006. All of the students and staff have been rightly awarded for their hard work and effort dedicated towards their school. “I like the fact that students are being awarded for their hard work,” said Torres, “I feel like it’s very good motivation to keep up the good work ethic.” Some students even have the privilege of being awarded multiple times. These students have the privilege to voice their opinions of their school more than once. Every time the students and staff are taken out for lunch, they are asked to share what they would like to change about the school. “I told Mr. Mirizio that the bathroom really needs some work because most of the bathrooms on campus are in very bad condition,” said sophomore Chayla Bonelli. Many of the students are nominated by their teachers, who see them on a daily basis. In the classroom, teachers can determine which students are worthy of the award. “I like that I was nominated by a teacher and that I was rewarded with free food,” said senior Sabrina Hernandez, who was nominated in September. At the luncheon, students and teachers alike sit at a big table and talk to each other about school. They talk about what they like about Marcos, and what they think would be a good change to the school. The one person who looks forward to this the most is principal Frank Mirizio. “I want [students] feedback, what they really like and dislike about Marcos,” he said, “I also want to get to know students more and let them know me more.” What many people don’t know is that Mirizio has no part in choosing the Padre of the Month winners. A committee made up of teachers and students get together to pick the next month’s Padres. Mirizio also said that students can nominate teachers, and teachers can nominate students. However, students can nominate other students, and they often do. To nominate someone, see Mrs. Toy in Activities.
