By Sara Patrick

Our whole life is made up of cause and effect. While some choose to go down the path of modesty, other take all they can get their hands on, but the more you take, the more you’ll have to lose. Doing a nice deed for someone else is always pleasing. But what is the real reason behind the generosity? Is it simply because you want to offer what you have to others, or because you want to show off what you have that others don’t? From the “pay it forward” philosophy, it’s better to be humble than to help someone for your own selfish reasons. Generosity is not a game. Doing something thoughtful for another person with only the intention that people will think highly of you does not show kindness, it shows selfishness. If people come to the impression that your intentions are genuine, the only thing you have proven is that you’ve mastered the skill of manipulation. It’s like you haven’t left 1 st grade. You live inside a fantasy world where your best friends become mindless dolls and action figures. They do whatever you make them do. You decide what adventure will happen today and how the outcome will be. Everyone just plays along, oblivious to what is happening behind stage. While you have your fun playing with the minds of innocent people, I’ll sit back and enjoy the show. It will be interesting to see how long you can keep up with this game of pretend. Everything is going along great for you until one of your minions deciphers what will happen next. Everything you’ve worked up to crumbles to the ground in a matter of seconds. Acts of kindness won’t make a difference, and your realization of what’s important won’t bring any apologies. After everything you’ve possessed and all the minds you’ve corrupted, what do you have to say about yourself? It must be a great feeling to know that everyone who cares about you will never know the difference between the lies told to their faces or what is purely honest. As human beings, we create our own cause and effect. The decisions we make will speak louder than words in the final result; we have no control of the effect of our choices. As the saying goes, “Pay it forward.”
