During the unit, students are put on their own four- or five-person island and complete various assignments, including creating and naming their own island, naming their tribe and creating a beast that lives on their island. The final group assignment is for each student to bring a food, which represents one of the four main characters: Ralph, Piggy, Jack and Simon. "We spend so much time discussing the novel in a serious classroom setting that it's fun to go outside the box and do something different," Mr. Kent said. Food that was brought in ranged from a marshmallow-designed pig to a cake that was frosted to look like an island. Unfortunately, no one brought in "Lord of the Fries."
