After football season when all football games seize the marching bands season’s ends. The color guard however, takes a different turn from marching season into winter. “With marching band, you are sometimes hidden by the band plus you have to rely on them for music,” explained junior Samantha Quick. “You also get counts from a drum major. In winter guard you are exposed completely, and the music never changes. You don’t have to worry about the flutes splitting and such. It is also more fun to perform in general.” Winter guard is when all things learned from marching season brought inside and designed into a show to match a song on a CD. “I enjoy winter guard season without the band more. It is more intense and defiantly more precise during winter guard,” said junior Allison Cook. The SVHS's color guard is made of two teams this year. Most of the color guard is made of freshman for this year while a few of the returners still remain. Color guard is not considered by most people to be a competitive sport. Which in fact is just like cheerleading its physically demanding and it’s a competitive sport. “It is very athletic, and we must be healthy,” explained Cook. “Sometimes the choreography is hard on the body.” Whenever the winter guard season is close to being complete the guards reach out to the middle school by performing for them. They show how anyone can do it. The SVHS guard isn't just made of only girls there also is a few boys on the team. A lot of time and dedication goes into performing and making the show the possible best that the guard can make it. The color guard spends two hours after school on Mondays making sure their drill is correct along with flag work. On Wednesday nights the guard stays three hours to work on the show cleaning it, running through drill, etc. “It requires a lot of stamina and you have to be careful when throwing things,” explained Quick. “So you do not break your nose.” For their first competition the A guard came in third place with Paulo Verda High School in second and Foothill High School in first. “Our biggest competition is defiantly foothill, they stole our chorographer,” said senior Kendall Welling. At their second competition the A guard had came in fourth place out of five. “This year the season is going great! More than half of the team is completely new to the activity,” explained Welling. “But we have taught them well! Now hopefully they will all stay so they don’t have to do as much work working with the little ones next year.” The SVHS color guard is well known for their competitive field shows and winter guard shows. The team hopes they are able to knock FHHS off the stands and take over first place.
