By Ana Escalera, Staff Writer

On December fourth through December 19, the Yellow Boat will be opening in San Diego SCPA's Grand Theater. Although the performance is the main event, the art department has decided to put on a complimentary pre-show art display in the Little Theatre called "Arts & Activism." The art show will run directly from the fourth through the 19, showing every night. "The project is about students coming up with issues that they care about," says Ms. Lori Miles , the photography teacher. "The goal is for students to learn how to express their feelings about global issues through their art." With much anticipation all the visual arts teachers are making their students prepare a piece for the show. But don't fret--anyone can submit a piece to the show. The idea of the art show was inspired by Yellow Boat . The play is about a boy named Benjamin Saars who's diagnosed with aids. Benjamin's father wrotethis play dedicated to his son's journey through the struggle. He chooses to express Benjamin's feelings and thoughts through art, which Benjamin loved. "Basically the art department wanted to do something to participate in main stage by hosting a visual arts show," says Miles. With excitment and determination running through the participants of this expressional show, attendees can expect to be blown away and leave with a feeling of wanting to help. The staff working on this project are also looking forward to seeing the end result and are personally appreciating the idea. Miles, who is also department in chair says, "I feel like it's a good way for students to think in terms of making art that is related to issues that affect their lives. As department of chair im looking for a way to connect with other departments, like, drama or dance." So come check out the pre-show and be prepared to be moved by inspiring and thoughtful artwork.
