The Changing Ways of Girls Basketball

http://my.hsj.org/schools/newspaper/tabid/100/view/frontpage/schoolid/2691/articleid/495357/the_changing_ways_of_girls_basketball.aspx

By Colleen Harrington

Girl’s varsity basketball is not a moneymaker at Dominion; however, it is a force to be reckoned with. Winning a few games here and there alongside losing by slim margins, the girl’s varsity team has come a long way since the school opened. The team’s successful season has come from the changing up of the type of game played. Anne Gasser, the head varsity coach has switched up her coaching to benefit the team. “We have had the same system over the past few years; I have to change up the system to have a winning game,” Gasser said. Which means playing a running game or a half court game depending on the group of girls that are in game. The girl’s first win was their first game played against Falls Church which was won 51 to 17. Since then, the girls have won 8 out of 18 games, and their last four games were victories. The latest win was against Heritage 49 to 42, and on January 13 th the girls beat Potomac Falls 49 to 42. “ We have a really talented core group who has been playing together for awhile and during the preseason, our starting five spent a lot of time working together in order to get our chemistry. A lot of the close games we could have easily won, but injuries and sickness has prevented us from having our true starting five playing together for a good portion of the game,” said Brittanne Gasser, a four year varsity player. The team has faced obstacles when it comes down to injuries; however, that has not stopped our Lady Titans. “We came into the season more confidently because of last year’s win over Broad Run for the first time. Also, this year we’re more of an outside threat [outside shooters] which makes teams have to play more honest [guarding and defense wise],” Coach Gasser said. Every team has an Achilles heel, and for the titans, that would be confidence. “We need to continue to truly believe in ourselves. Everyone is capable of being a good player. We have not had a winning season, but once they get over that hump we can show people that we can compete against the top contenders,” Coach Gasser said. As the team continues through the season, the future is present on their minds. “The future goals of Titan basketball are to continue to improve fundamentally and to continue growing closer as a team so that we continue to win games,” said Brigit Kirwan, a two-year varsity player. Not only is the team interested in chemistry, but they are also involved in helping out the younger players. “We hold clinics with the Seneca travel team and invite them to games and we will continue to invite them to come to practices,” Coach Gasser said. By keeping the interest of younger players, it will develop the girl’s basketball program into a very strong unit. The new year of 2012 will hopefully bring the girls varsity basketball program strength to continue and meet their goal of finishing in the top four. “ My first year on varsity, the team won no games. My second year, we won one game. Last year, we won three or four I think. This year we definitely have the best chance to win against any team in the district,” Gasser said. Come out and support Dominion’s Lady Titans. The effort they have put into the season and offseason is true dedication. Gasser said , “ this is definitely the closest I’ve ever been with my team during the four years I've been on varsity basketball. I can truly say I'm going to miss each and every one of them when it's over.” The Lady Titans play at Tuscarora at 7:30 p.m. on January 31 st . Come out and support the girls varsity basketball to hopefully beat Huskies.
