Drummers raise dollars for community

http://my.hsj.org/schools/newspaper/tabid/100/view/frontpage/schoolid/378/articleid/133416/drummers_raise_dollars_for_community.aspx

By Lindsey Hopkins

The rumbling of drums could be heard by all who drove by Wal-Mart on March 16. The Lee County High School Drumline recently held their second annual drum-a-thon in the Wal-Mart parking lot. This year they were raising money to help the tornado relief effort for Enterprise, Alabama, Americus and Baker County. And in order to ensure a big success, the drummers played from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Since they were trying to raise money for three different places, the Drumline decided that the best way to raise enough money for each area was to drum for a longer period of time. Apparently this plan worked out well because over $3,600 was raised, $1,000 of which was donated by Wal-Mart. If helping those who were affected by the tornado was not enough incentive to donate money, senior Garrett Snyder and junior Kevin Vierling agreed to shave their heads if $1000 was raised. Once the $1,000 mark was reached, Snyder shaved his head and later on when the total reached $2,500, Vierling joined the ranks of the shaven heads. This was not the first act of philanthropy on the part of the drummers. Earlier this year, they joined ranks to raise funds for Eric Pehrsson, an alumni who was facing brain surgery, and last year they joined forces to raise money for Michael Odom, twin brother of band member Matt Odom, after a serious car accident. The money earned from this latest act of percussion charity will be tagged and sent to Enterprise Alabama, Americus and Baker County through the Red Cross.
