By Michael Seebold

The symphonic metal group, Nightwish, is easily one of the most epic bands in the music industry today. Their signature style consists of a mix of male and female vocals, vast orchestral parts, and influences from a broad range of musical genres, including classical, metal and rock and roll. Their latest album, a live record entitled “ Made in Hong Kong (And in Various Other Places) ,” is a superb addition to their already-fantastic collection of albums. Recorded during the band’s most recent world tour, “ Made in Hong Kong (And in Various Other Places) ” is also the second album to feature the band’s new lead vocalist, Anette Olzon, since her joining the band in 2007 and the recording of their studio album “ Dark Passion Play .” While the set of songs on this new live album is predominantly made up of those from “ Dark Passion Play ” (with the exception of a couple of bonus tracks that were not originally included on the studio album), the live atmosphere provides the songs with a completely new, unique sound. This is evident on two tracks in particular. The live renditions of “ Whoever Brings the Night ” and “ The Islander ” are arguably even better than the original studio versions, and they are certainly two highlights of the album. Also of note is the included demo to the song “ Cadence of Her Last Breath .” Previously sung by Anette Olzon, the demo offers yet another new perspective to one of Nightwish’s songs, this time being sung by the band’s bass guitarist, Marco Hietala. One final plus on the album is a live version of the instrumental “ Last of the Wilds ,” which exemplifies Nightwish’s musical talent even in the absence of vocals. Overall, “ Made in Hong Kong (And in Various Other Places) ” is an epic masterpiece that will likely appeal to listeners whether they are already fans of the band, or are listening to the band’s music for the first time. For anyone interested in grandiose music with metal influences, Nightwish’s newest live album is definitely a worthwhile purchase. The Keystone Connection has been viewed times since 18-OCT-2008.
