By Ariana Ricci

44 Years Ago An Italian family outgrew their Federal Hill tenement Shouting, honking, crowding In exchange for a solemn quiet A piece of land on which to build their very own home They carved the path that would be their street The first ones to arrive. 41 Years Ago The mile-long trek to school Was no longer a novelty For the two young sons. Through rain, snow, and heat they persevered With mixed feelings they learned of the new school That would replace Cranberry Pond just down the street. 19 Years Ago The father gave to the son His very own piece of that precious land Chopping, clearing, creating The foundation of my future was built New house, new couple, new life Same street. 7 Years Ago The woods across the street Were no longer. Empty, barren, cold The view from my bedroom window Would never be the same Hardly a tree in sight. Instead, three identical new homes Complete with a white picket fence. 1 Year Ago I woke up to find a house in my backyard. We’re surrounded on all sides Running, playing, barking Where open windows and sleeping in don’t mix But never a dull moment Just like the house on Federal Hill.
