By Sara Facchiano

Children should be treated like children . Trying children as adults is usually inaccurate and can result in unnecessary death. To get the death penalty you have to be proven corrupted beyond help and most people don’t develop morally until their early twenties. It is against the constitution to give the death penalty to people under 18 unless severe conviction can be proven. However, since 1985, 22 juveniles have been given the death penalty. Trained physiologists have trouble telling whether teens have been corrupted or not. This is important because if physiologists have trouble telling whether or not a teen is corrupted it makes it almost impossible for a randomly selected jury to determine that. Children and teens are easily impressionable and impulsive. This can have major effects on their behavior and can change the outcome in their punishment. The death penalty can be wrongly placed on children and teens so it shouldn’t be implemented at all. To get the death penalty you have to be proven corrupted beyond help and most people don’t develop morally until their early twenties. They are influenced by their surroundings and often don't think for themselves. Children and teens can be impulsive and don’t think about the consequences of an action. Unlike adults, their brains haven’t fully developed and shouldn’t be blamed that they are corrupted. It is against the Constitution to give the death penalty to people under 18. This is because it is almost impossible to accurately accuse a person under 18 of being corrupted. To be corrupted you have to exhaust every possibility of being under some influence or having a mental condition (By the 8th Amendment of the Bill of Rights). This is important because the Amendments are rights as Americans and they shouldn’t be broken. All in all the Constitution should be respected and children should not get the death penalty. Children being sentenced to death usually result in unnecessary deaths. As of 2004, 72 children were on death row. That makes up only 2% of death row inmates but it’s 2% too many. Children should be treated like children. They make mistakes, but these mistakes shouldn’t result in the death penalty.
