The increasingly high number of students is causing a strain in the classroom and for security. According to a recent article, Educationweek.com, the average class size for high schools in California should have between 22-25 students. Also, a class should not excel more than 35 students. “Right now I have about 33 students in almost each of my classes,” Bond Cashmere, an English and AVID teacher at Tracy High, said, “It does get difficult when I need students to pay attention and listen, but besides that I am kind of used to it. I did expect this number of students this year, and so I prepared for it.” According registrar Lisa McMahon, Tracy High was slated to have 1,800 students this fall. Instead, there are 2,100 students, with as many 18 classes over the recommended maximum limit. “The reason why our high schools are getting more students is because families are struggling and they move around a lot,” McMahon said, “causing students to switch schools because of the school zone they moved into.” With all the moving, it is causing uneven amounts of students distributed within the schools. This is why there are more students in one school then the others. Due to the excess students there are problems with space and also when students need help. With all of this students may find themselves to be stressed out due to this. “A few of my classes feel a bit crowded,” freshman Francisco Gonzalez, said. “There seem to be more desks than the room should have, and it usually takes the teacher awhile to get to everyone who needs help.” The amount of students Tracy High has means security sometimes has problems with problematic students and crowds. “We only have problems when there has to be crowd control and with students that get into trouble,” Gabe Castro, supervisor of security, said, “but besides that there hasn’t been a difference from the previous years.” According to principal Jason Noll, there might be a slight decrease of students within the next year, but as of now there is no change to the enrollment size “We hope to have this number decrease soon, but it might be awhile.” Noll said.
