Phun In Philly

By Julie Serpico

Dining in Philadelphia can get pretty monotonous if you always stick to the same old places like Pod and Jones, but Philadelphia has recently become a foodie Mecca and restaurants of all different price ranges have been popping up in neighborhoods around the city. If you are willing to venture out into the up-and-coming Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, then make sure you try brunch at Honey’s Sit n’ Eat. The wait for brunch on a weekend morning can get lengthy at this neighborhood gem but because it attracts such a diverse group of people, people-watching makes the wait fly by. The dishes served at Honey’s are mouthwatering combinations of Jewish home cooking and Southern comfort foods. Make sure you try their made-from-scratch buttermilk biscuits with gravy and their latkes. With a tofu scramble among many of its meatless dishes, Honey’s is also great for vegetarians. Menu items range from only $7 to $12. It is open Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sat., 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Sun., 8 a.m.-4 p.m. If you have spent all morning shopping on Walnut Street and you are ready for a satisfying lunch, head on over to the trendy new Stephen Starr restaurant, Parc, right across from Rittenhouse Square for some French fare. A favorite among visiting celebrities, do not be surprised if your rubbing elbows with actors like Reese Witherspoon or athletes like Chase Utley. With menu items such as croque madame and nicoise salad you will feel like you are dining in a bistro in Paris’ 6 th Arrondissement. Sandwiches are under $14 and you can enjoy a light lunch for under $16. Its open Mon.-Thurs ., 7:30 a.m.- 11 p.m.; Fri., 7:30 a.m. – midnight; Sat., 10 a.m.- midnight; and Sun., 10 a.m.- 10 p.m. Jose Garces is now a world-renowned chef with restaurants all over the city but his fairly new place, Distrito, located around the UPenn campus, caters to a younger fun-loving crowd. It is a great place to bring a large group of friends- pink lighting emanates from the walls, an entire wall is covered in “luchador” masks (think Nacho Libre ), one of the tables is inside a Volkswagen bug, and throughout the evening a guitarist wanders around the bi-level restaurant singing traditional Mexican songs. The cuisine is influenced by the flavors and culture of Mexico City but be adventurous when you order! Yes, the guacamole is amazing but do not be afraid of the “lengua” or tongue tacos or the duck queso fundido. Also, make sure you get the churros for dessert. You can make it out of Distrito without spending over $30 for a meal prepared by one of the best chefs in America (who is now attempting to become the Next Iron Chef, if you watch the Food Network) and that is a pretty good deal! Distrito is open Mon.-Fri., 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.-9 p.m. as well as Sat. and Sun. 5-9 p.m. Make reservations before you go!
