Students who compete at UIL meets belong to a team of their desired skill requirements. Students practice and study for months to be ready for the events they are in, like Headline Writing, or Computer Applications, to get the academic recognition they deserve. Everyone who goes is eligible to get a placing, but only 1 st through 6 th place get a reward, so the competition for these coveted places is high. Journalism, Debate, and Computer Applications teams participated in the meet. The teams tried their best, but only two students were granted places in this meet: Juan Cerda, 5 th place in Spelling and Vocabulary, and Eddie Sigala, 4 th place in Computer Applications. The Debate team were able to advance to a second round, but were unsuccessful with finals. Veteran UIL participant, Senior, Juan Cerda stated that competing at these types of events adds prestige and recognition to the school. "This was only practice, but I’m confident that I will do better next time," he said, regarding his performance at the meet. "We need something to give us confidence, and hopefully this will help." “Everyone worked hard and tried their best,” said Cathy Lucket, UIL Coach. She stated that many people were new to the event and were not familiar with how it all worked. "It was a good learning experience, everyone took it seriously, and hopefully, we will do better next time.”
