Washington

As the ILS track and field season comes to an end it is now time for districts, regionals, and states. Booker T. Washington hosted the districts for this year on April 13, 2012, which means that it was during spring break. So while everyone was at the beach tanning, the track members were hard at work practicing and getting ready for districts. Junior Frankie Alzuro said that although he could not go to the beach with his friends, at least he was doing something that he liked. Frankie said “we had to practice 3 times during spring break, but it was fun spending time with the ‘family’.” Frankie shares that he listens to “the strokes” to get mentally prepared, he says that “it is pretty mellow but it gets me really pumped up.” Unfortunately, Frankie did not make it to regionals in neither of his events which are the 400, 4X4, or long jump. However, although he did not make it he said that he had fun being with his friends and cheering on his teammates. Regionals was at Ansin Sports Complex hosted by Ransom Everglades High School on April 18, 2012 which did not give the athletes much time to get ready. However, with determination and heart they went out there with everything they had. Regionals is tough to get by, because many of the athletes there have been training for months and are from great schools, but so have many of our athletes so it was some good competition. Senior Martin Cuesta who made it to regionals for discus placing second with a throw of 119 ft. 3 in. said that he likes to stay mentally focused with what is going on during the track meet. Also, that “you can not think about the other people you have to stay focused on how well you throw.” Unfortunately, Martin did not make it to states missing by only 2 inches, but he did beat his own personal record with a throw of 134 ft. 9 in. Cuesta added on saying that, “it sucks that i missed states by only 2 inches, but it felt pretty good throwing it farther than before.” The athletes that did have the privilege to attend states on April 28, 2012 are Junior Anisa Santiago for the 100 meter run, and Junior Marisol de Ornelas for High Jump. To get everyones results or look at your favorite athletes records you can also go to Florida Runners , where you can type in any athlete and get all of their records.
