According to officials from Nigeria’s emergency management agency at least 80 people have died, and over 190 were injured because of the violence that ensued after the blasts. A radical Muslim sect, the Boko Haram group, has admitted to carrying out the bombings in Jos. One website belonging to the Muslim group said they committed the attacks to “ start avenging the atrocities committed against Muslims.” However, the police chief in Jos has said that he doesn’t believe the bombing to have been the work of Boko Haram as it is not their usual method. The Muslim spiritual leader, Sultan Mohammadu Sa’ad Abubaker, has also expressed doubt as to the radical group’s part in the bombings. Both Sultan Muhammadu and Ayo Oritsejafor, the head of the Christian Association of Nigeria, blame politicians for many of the problems plaguing the country. It is widely believed that the local politicians abuse the tension between religions for their own personal gain. The city of Jos is located relatively in the center of Nigeria, between the Muslim dominated north, and the prominently Christian south. Jos has been devastated by violence in the past decade due to the opposing religions. According to Oritsejafor, the politicians know peoples’ weaknesses. “They know how to manipulate their beliefs and they know the… parts of the country where people react very easily,” he said. Sultan Muhammadu said “If the government in that area is… purposeful enough… they will find answers to these problems.”
