By Kayla Jeffers

Kayla Jeffers
Jake Martin talks to a Medic volunteer answering preliminary questions before he could donate blood.

March is the American Red Cross month and the organization hopes to push people to the action of donating opportunity; whether it is donating blood, money, or time. While donating money and blood may be nice, not many people get to experience this rewarding opportunity. Donating blood consist of 3 individual requirements: Register- all paper work is completely filled out Donation- give blood Refreshments- enjoy the after effect of donating; enjoy the relief On March 24, 2011 Hardin Valley Academy hosted a Medic Blood Drive and it was held in the auditorium. Participants must be 17 years of age, but can be 16 with parental consent. The participant had to be in good general health meaning; they could not drink alcohol, not have the cold/flu, could not have diabetes if the disease was uncontrolled, could not have cancer- with a 5 year waiting period after vaccination, could not have AIDS/HIV or one of their symptoms, and had to weigh at least 110 pounds. People have been donating blood for 40 years if not longer. Every second of every day, someone needs blood. The blood comes from volunteering donors, like America. Currently only 3 out of every 100 people in America donate blood. HVA is contributed to the drive with several students lining up to donate blood. Ashley Thompson and Mary Smith donated blood and when asked why they did, they both replied by saying, “We donated blood to help save peoples’ lives, and we really wanted to help.” Several students from Hardin Valley Academy have tagged along side their friends and others to face their fears. Donating blood is not just to save someone’s life, but also to protect the family from a depressed and stressful future referring to if they lost a child due to loss of blood. Hardin Valley Academy has opened the hearts of students and dug deep down to see how many will actually donate their blood in order for someone to live. HVA has changed the minds of students and teachers throughout the building. After donating blood, students walked through the halls with their heads held higher. Donating blood brought about a new perspective to look up to and add on a list of achievements or goals.
