By Ethan Block

Top Ten Horror Movies Halloween is upon us again, the time for costumes, candy and being locked in a dark room with a bunch of friends watching horror movies. With so many options, and with so many of them being just plain stupid, doing a top ten list of the “Must see horror movies” seems logical for those that will be going through a horror marathon over Halloween. So, without further interruptions: 10) Jaws: Da dun….da dun….da dun… it’s a familiar theme that we all know and love. Jaws, the movie about a great white shark that ate anything in its path, is number ten on the slot not for the fact that the movie itself was legitimately scary (it was more on the suspense side) but for the fear that it invoked in people. After watching this movie, people were afraid to go to the beach for fear of getting munched by a shark. The scenes in the move where the helpless people are eaten and brutally killed are more disturbing and gross than scary on a psychological level, but as previously said this movie scared so many people into going into the water that it deserves the #10 slot on the list. 9) SAW (Original): NOTE: this is the original SAW 10 min short film. This is what inspired the SAW films but by far; it is still the creepiest and scariest of the SAW movies. The movie is about David, the survivor of a strange kidnapping and attempted murder, and the only way he survived, was by murdering someone who was thought to be dead. The short is just so much more concise than the films and has all the best parts from the first movie, while retaining that scary and creepy aspect that was in the first Movie. The SAW original rightfully nets itself the #9 spot on the list. 8) Stephen King’s IT: This movie has a history, as soon as it was released it had made both children and adults TERRIFIED of clowns. IT is about a sleepy little town that has one issue, there is a psycho clown that only children can see, and it kills them. The clown has a very demon like appearance and is apparently obsessed with things that “float”. The movie in itself wasn’t all that scary as much as it was just plain creepy; and, like Jaws, it instilled so much fear into people that they never wanted to see clowns again. Some people I know today run away from clowns whenever they see them because of this movie, so it gets #8 on the list. 7) Friday the 13 th (1980): Jason Voorhees is one of the most iconic horror killers to date, but before Jason, there was his mother. Friday the 13 th revolved around a bunch of kids reopening an abandoned camp as new counselors and was one by one getting killed off. The common misconception was that it was Jason Voorhees killing the counselors, when it was in fact his mother; Jason doesn’t appear until the 2 nd movie and doesn’t have his iconic hockey mask until part 3, I digress. Friday the 13 th was an overall very creepy movie and combined with its amazing use of suspense and music, makes it a classic horror/slasher hybrid, and earns itself #7 on the list. 6) Evil Dead II: “Groovy” would be one word to describe the movie that is Evil Dead II, another few would be creepy and scary. Evil Dead II is about a man named Ash who goes to an abandoned shack for a romantic weekend with his girlfriend when he accidently awakens the power in the legendary book known as the Necronomicon (The book of the Dead). Now Ash has to fight of an evil demonic horde along with his own hand and a few idiotic locals. The movie was classified as a horror/comedy movie but there are enough terrifying moments coupled with Sam Rami’s signature first person creeper camera views to net Evil Dead II a #6 spot on the list. 5) The Shining: Probably one of the most terrifying American horror movies ever made, the Shining rightfully deserves to be on this list. The Shining is about a family that comes to a Hotel for a weekend getaway and for the father to get some new ideas for a piece he is writing. The Hotel however is built on an Indian burial ground and therefore causes creepy things to occur and can even make people go crazy. The plot is one I don’t want to spoil and you will have to experience from yourself, but, from the creepy little twins, to Jack Nicholson breaking through a door with an axe and yelling the iconic line “Here’s Johnny!” this movie deserves all credit towards it and #5 on the list. 4) Alien: The movie that helped to define the Science Fiction Horror genre, Alien is one of the scariest and classic movies to come out of the 1970’s. Alien is about the crew of the ship known as the Nostromo who find a strange frequency on an alien space craft and go on board to discover what it is. Later, an alien creature attaches itself to one of the crew’s face, and an Alien bursts out of his stomach as they attempt to return to earth. The movie had some of the best atmospheric moods and suspenseful moments that had you on the edge of your seat. This also nets it #4 on the list. 3) The Thing: There was another movie that helped to define Science Fiction Horror, and that was John Carpenter’s: “The Thing”. The movie is about an Alaskan research crew that finds an abandoned research station with most of the member’s in it dead. As they explore the place more, they find a monstrous dog that attacks some of the team. They discover that the dog is an Alien that can transform into any life form it so chooses…and the sinew from the dog gets loose into the station. The movie was both terrifying, suspenseful and made all of the characters just seemed like sheep being herded to the slaughter. Giving their characters the true emotions of fear that a real person would face, this nets the thing at #3 for the list. 2) The Ring: The ring is an American take on a Japanese Horror movie of the same name. Both versions are INCREDIBLY scary but for the sake of localization, I will be talking about the American version. The ring is about a supposedly cursed video tape that when people watch it, die in a week. A girl watches it dies and her best friend is placed in a mental hospital. A friend of the girl, Rachel, begins investigating the murder and watches the tape, and is called and told that she will die in seven days. Throughout this time, some of the most surreal, terrifying, and disturbing hallucinations and imagery appear on screen which defines its J-Horror roots. For this The Ring rightfully get its slot as #2. 1) Psycho: Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece, Psycho has been hailed as the best horror movie of all time and it rightfully deserves this title. Psycho is about a motel run by a young man who has never gotten over the death of his mother. Throughout the movie, strange killings have occurred in the motel and it creates the classic “Who dun it” situation. I don’t want to spoil anymore of the plot because like The Shining, this is one to see to truly experience. From the classic music, to the absolute suspense, the iconic shower scene that made so many people afraid to bathe at hotels, and it’s brilliant plot and execution, earns it the #1 spot on my list of best horror movies.
