By Anders Voss

The PHS boys CC team starts their race at Nemadji.

Fall sports at Proctor have been having successful seasons all around. With several teams ranking in the area and several individuals performing at high levels, Proctor is looking good. The football team has been doing well. When they play well and execute they have been tough to beat. Football has been working on the fundamentals, so they can move on to more advance things, and win more games. Football has shrunk the playbook this year. “We try to run what we do better, quality over quantity,” said head coach Derek Parendo. The defense is playing more aggressive and understands their roles better then last year, leading to one of the top defenses in the area. Boys soccer ended its regular season with a record of 12-5-1, with a small slide at the end of the season. But, head coach Jesse Smith said that they are getting back on track with how they played in the last game. Coach Smith believes that soccer is the ultimate team sport and the team remembered that at the end. The scoring became more balanced and the team quit playing like 11 individuals. With 13 seniors leading the team, Coach Smith’s transition to the head coach was made a lot easier. Girls soccer played well this season, earning a 3-seed going into the playoffs. “The girls put in a lot of time in the summer to get prepared for this season,” said assistant coach Eric Waldriff, and he hopes that they will do it again this summer. The girls soccer coaches have been tracking the girls’ fitness as well. They are tested at the beginning of the season, and again at the end of the season to monitor improvement. These changes have helped this season and will, hopefully, become more apparent next year. Cross Country has been improving through out the season. They have been gaining participants and are up to about 25 runners. Head coach Lowell Harnell said that CC is probably in the top 25% of the conference. Several individuals have been real stand outs this year, such as Matt Welch and Tom Rossiter. Welch is ranked in the top 10 in the area and is running well. Swimming has been having a great season and they are hoping to be the Lake Superior Conference champs. They’ve practiced diligently and encourage one another. The varsity has focused more on dry land training this year. “The girls are looking faster everyday,” said assistant coach Julie Stauber. Volleyball’s record does not show the success they’ve had working as a team. They work hard in practice on the little mistakes and hit the work out center. They have not made any significant changes and hope to keep growing as a team. The coaches had many thoughts on why PHS sports are doing as well as they have this season. The athletes have put in lots of time in the summer and are very supportive of one another. The athletes have a different attitude this year; they’re positive and expect to win. There is great participation and school spirit this year.
